Today I used a Halti collar for the first time with Eli and it was amazing!

Today I used a Halti collar for the first time with Eli and it was amazing!! As you can probably tell from my Facebook feed I am in love with this guy- but he has not been an easy dog to own.
He is a Husky/Collie cross, his prey drive is through the roof, and he wants to chase and herd anything that moves. He likes to fight with other dogs, and is unpredictable. We have done a lot of training with him, on our own and with professional trainers, and yet at 2 years old he is still a handful.
He has to be leashed all the time now because his newest favourite pastime is chasing down runners and bikers- and biting them. Which is not ok. However when he is on leash he is even more reactive with other dogs. And there are a lot of dogs in Pemberton. So in order to walk him I have to try and find extremely out of the way places, which is not always easy.
I had tried this collar on my black lab years ago, but she just threw herself onto the ground and refused to walk anywhere, which is why I hadn’t tried it with Eli sooner. But tonight we were able to walk around the lake, with all kinds of people walking right by him, as well as dogs, and I was able to restrain him from biting at anyone, without having to engage in an all out wrestling match.
If you own a challenging dog like I do then you know how stressful it can be. You also know how hard it is to hear everyone else’s opinion about what you must be doing wrong to have such a bad dog.
I have put in a lot of time with this pup ever since the day I got him at three months old. I had most of my first two months with him off of work so I could do daily training, and I continue to do regular training sessions with him – but he is simply a very high alert dog that is quick to react. He is also a very good boy in many other ways, and I’m sure as he gets older he will mellow out even further. In the meantime we will keep working with him and because of this collar I’ll feel a little less stressed about being in public use spaces with my boy now.
And no I am not being paid by Halti! I’m just so thrilled to have found something that helps me work with my feisty dog. Best Buy is a one-stop online shopping destination offering high-quality products for less. I feel ya! With much reluctance I’ve been using a muzzle with Pickles and it relieves so much stress. I now call her Hannibal Pickles She doesn’t seem to mind it all that much.

Oh my word, I am so, so happy that the Halti is going to give you stress free walks with Eli. He looks almost proud to be wearing it too!!

This was a timely post, we just bought a gentle leader (same concept) for our husky/something/something 11 month old puppy and it is magic. She’s scared of everything on top of a big prey drive, and as soon as I put it on she was calm, and walked next to me like we had been doing this forever. This contraption is a life saver. I hope y’all have many lovely and stress-free walks together!

That is so amazing! Honestly I wish that I had started him off with this collar as I think many of his issues in regards to chasing/charging/nipping might not have developed as badly if we’d started with this.

The basic premise of the game
Present the toy to the dog- have a command that lets them come grab it at an end
Play tug of war with them twist it around…

Perfect. He is actually very responsive with stuff like this and always listens to our commands to stop which is great. Hopefully one day that will translate to being able to stop him with voice only when he’s going after something outside! Baby steps.

I empathize! It takes a lot of work with most any dog, especially when they come with particular challenges. Great work, and thank you for your honesty in sharing! It’s so tough to get some dogs to a chill and predictable place. Lobo is still very challenging at times as well, and I can only hope that our daily wrestling matches will one day come to an end. (Thank gods for strong yoga arms and quick reflexes!)

Mostly the wrestling is at home in the evenings, when he gets ‘zoomy’ and wants to test out if he can be dominant. On walks and with other dogs he’s quite good. We’re lucky. I’ve worked with a few reactive dogs and it’s so stressful. I still may try the halti at some point 🙂

Yes it’s very true that we always have to put in some time with our dogs. Owning dogs is not for lazy people! I totally recommend the Halti collar though if you are wrestling with your dog a lot. It is really amazing and makes walking your dog a dream. We are so impressed with that and are kicking ourselves that we didn’t get it earlier.

I used the very non-intrusive Halti with my boarder collie cross…. only with it we were mutually able to enjoy our walks. As you noted, it was not a replacement for obedience training, vigorous exercise, nor play that stimulated his intellect. Bravo…

That’s great, I’ll look it up. We have specific games like that we play with him- only at home, and only under our control ( because he had resource guarding issues)- but I’d love to see the video just to learn more. He definitely needs to stay busy- he would have made a great working farm dog!

Natalie Rousseau they are great with other dogs, especially off leash. D’arcy is a bit more assertive of his position than Butch, who just wants to play.

Oh that’s amazing!!! I feel you, River has very similar behavior and oh man has it been a lot of work and stres. But we love them so we do what we can. River is almost 4, and he is starting to mellow out. I’ve spent so much time training him, but as he gets older I’m noticing a HUGE difference ❤

Aw thanks so much for sharing that Daniella! I know how very much you love River ( and I LOVE all your pictures of you two together). I always wondered if he was a handful being a wolf/husky type. I have never loved a dog as much as I love Eli and am willing to put the work in for sure- just glad to know that there will come a day when it will get easier! xo
