In a bookstore in Sydney today, I was paying for a used copy of Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer. My American accent gave me away. The old bookstore clerk said, “Beware of Donald Trump.” I said, “He is just entertainment. He won’t get elected.” The bookstore man said, “That’s what they said about Bush’s second term.” I almost choked. Yes, I too had thought it impossible that Americans would re-elect George Bush. Was it impossible that we would elect Donald Trump?
On this same walk, I saw a poster about refugees. Google later told me there are thousands of these posters all over Australia. The poster I saw had graffiti on it. Below “Real Australians” someone had written “are aboriginals.”
